I missed 90mm last week due to a trip down to the Eifel Mountains for a spot of hurtling round the Grüne Holle - as an added bonus we didn't total any of the cars this trip round. And hit 138 mph down Fuchsröhre. Which was fun.
Because of that I was tempted to do something car related but I had something mind based on my previous post which continues my vague attempt at courting the surly mistress of continuity started all those weeks ago with the "2 many DJs" link then circling round to mentioning Spike Jonze (and resisting the opportunity to do "Elektrobank" which has Jonze directing his wife Sofia Coppola as the gymnast) and Kim Gordon and from there onto Sonic Youth and now ... Dinosaur Jr.
The link? My previous 90mm "Teenage Riot" is a song about an imaginary world in which hirsute Dinosaur Jr frontman J. Mascis is president - the original title being "Rock and Roll for President".
Tenuous? Bien Sur! Normal service will resume next week.
You've got to love the concept for this video - "It's called 'Out There' right? So we'll ship the band off to the woods and film them playing." "Great start! Love it! Then what?" "Hmm, let me see. Ok, how about this? About the 1:20 mark we'll build a big bonfire, ship in a load of young, attractive people, give them a metric shitload of drugs and film them going nuts!"
For added comedy value here's the same song performed live on with added, err, flourishes, on ... The Jenny Jones show. Ignore the fact that she gets the name of the song wrong and they show the "Hand it over" CD, not "Where you been?" although, to be fair, I think that was their latest album at the time.
You know that some booker got fired over that.
Appropriately given last week's post, Sonic Youth were in town last week performing "Daydream Nation" in its entirety at the Roundhouse for several nights in a row. In another moment of synchronicity I also read last week that James "Vacuum Cleaner" Dyson actually designed the auditorium and seats for it back in 1967. Whodathunk?
And, because I appear to be in some sort of odd trivia vomiting mood at the moment, observant viewers who were curious (or bored) enough to actually go watch the aforementioned video for SY's "100%" will have found the doomed skateboarder in it oddly familiar. That's because he's Jason Lee - Smithian muse, erstwhile sockless skater, Redneck doogoder and Scientologist.
Anyway, more Sonic Youth. And in keeping in with this vague pretence at a 'theme' the next one after that will be related too. As if you care what inane convolutions have gone on in my mind to make otherwise entirely separate entities tangentially related.
Have a riot.
