Monday has rolled round with that disconcerting regularity that marks the Gregorian Calendar. Damn you Space/Time continuum! You win again!
*cough*
Anyway, I'm the mood for some of that cynical optimism that the mid-90s Indie scene did so well, simultaneously mocking and embracing the whole Brit Pop thing and the laughable "Cool Britannia" initiative that our then brand new and shiny plastic Media Friendlee [tm] Prime Minister started. If you haven't already then can I thoroughly recommend getting hold of all of Warren Ellis' "Transmetropolitan" comics. If there was an Oscar for comics and it had the category for "Best story involving a bald, misanthropic thinly-veiled Hunter S. Thompson analogue set in a dystopian future that's simultaneously uplifting and depressing and genuinely dramatic whilst being shit yourself laughing hilarious and which contains multiple references to a popular snack based around Baby Seal Eyeballs" then this would surely win every time. The bulk of the second 2/3rds of the story arc is to do with The Smiler - a grinning sociopath of a politician 'inspired' by Comrade Blair. Very funny and surprisingly accurate.
Anyway, with that scene set it's time for a bit of Miki Berenyi and her popular musical beat combo. I was never really sure why they were lumped in with the shoe gazers of the time - not that I've got anything against shoe gazers having been more than familiar with the top of my size 10½ Doc Martens due to extended examination, especially in when talking to girls, and having been known for being prone to wearing baggy wool jumpers and sporting a rather horrific under cut in my time.
Ah Miki Berenyi, *siiiiigh*
You may have noticed a recurring theme with me and the chanteuses of bands of a certain genre and time period. I'm not ashamed of it. When I first moved to London some 11 years ago I did in spend rather too much time "hanging round in Camden on a Saturday night" on the off chance that I might bump into them or others like them - thus violating many of Mr Pip and Mr le Sac's rather excellent rules for life.
And remember. Magical truth telling bastard spidey says "Thou shalt not use poetry, art or music to get into girls' pants. Use it to get into their minds".
