90s Music Monday

They were strange times. Possibly Blur's weakest song, versus one of Oasis's least-worst, and yet Blur got the no. 1.

MOR is a better song of-that-type than Song 2.
I think if I had to pick a Blur video it'd probably end up being The Universal, even though Jonathan Glazer was able to rather lazily steal a lot of art direction from Stanley Kubrick. It's also, coincidentally, the sort of high concept video you can't imagine Blur doing at all.

So, will you be doing Pulp, the third (but arguably better than either) band in the Britpop ascendancy, next week?
The main difference between Blur and Oasis, as I see it, is that an Oasis song sounds like an Oasis song - but Blur managed to vary their output far more; so that for something like Song 2 it is tricky to identify the band at all. Oasis are still remaking the same record, whereas Blur went on, through Gorillaz especially, to make some really interesting and different stuff.
